About Dawson
Dawson was platted in 1884 beside the West Branch of the Lac qui Parle River and named for William Dawson, a former St. Paul mayor and one of the partners in the townsite company. Pioneer Christopher M. Anderson built a grand stone bank on 6th Street in 1892, and a Carnegie library and a National Guard armory followed in 1918 and 1923. Theodore Christianson, who published the Dawson Sentinel, went on to serve as governor of Minnesota. Since 1989 the town, known as Gnometown USA, has honored a well-loved local person each year with a 3-foot gnome, unveiled during Riverfest on the last full weekend in June. Neighbors visit the old bank, now a museum, and stroll the walking bridge and gnome park.
