About Minneota
Minneota was platted in 1881 when the railroad reached this spot on the South Branch of the Yellow Medicine River, and its name comes from Dakota words meaning much water. Icelandic families began arriving in the area in 1875, and they built St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1895, which still serves one of the largest Icelandic communities in the country. Every year on the weekend after Labor Day the town throws Boxelder Bug Days, with a grand parade, a chili cook-off and bug races. Today about 1,400 people live here, with a pool, walking trails, a nine-hole golf course, a riverside campground and a Vietnam Memorial and History Center on First Street.
