About Marcy-Holmes
Marcy-Holmes is where Minneapolis began: the town of St. Anthony grew up here on the east side of St. Anthony Falls, was laid out in 1849 and joined Minneapolis in 1872 so the two could share the falls' power for milling. Ard Godfrey, who came to build a dam and sawmill at the falls, built a house here in 1849 that is now the city's oldest wood-frame home, and in 1881 the Pillsbury A-Mill rose on the riverbank as the largest flour mill in the world. Today the old Main Street riverfront at St. Anthony Main looks across to downtown and the Stone Arch Bridge, and up the bluff Dinkytown's small shops, cafes and the Varsity Theater sit beside the University of Minnesota. It is the most populous neighborhood in Minneapolis, full of students, old houses and apartment buildings, and named for two of its parks, Marcy and Holmes.
