About Downtown
Downtown Minneapolis grew up on the west bank of the Mississippi River at St. Anthony Falls, where flour mills once lined the river; the Mill City Museum now stands on the site of the old Washburn A-Mill, next to Mill Ruins Park. By about 1900 Nicollet Avenue was the city's main shopping street, and in 1967 twelve blocks of it became Nicollet Mall, a street for walkers and buses. Starting in 1962, covered walkways called skyways began linking buildings over the streets, and today they join about 80 blocks so people can cross downtown out of the winter weather. People now come for the theaters on Hennepin Avenue, the Central Library on Nicollet Mall, and a walk or bike ride across the old Stone Arch Bridge over the river.
