About Neenah
Neenah sits where the Fox River leaves Lake Winnebago, on land that held a Ho-Chunk village into the 1830s; its name comes from the Ho-Chunk word for water. It began in 1835 as a government mission for the Menominee people, and settlers soon came for the river's water power. After the Civil War the railroad and new mills set off a boom, and in 1872 the Kimberly-Clark paper company was formed here, a year before Neenah became a city. Today people walk out to the lighthouse at Kimberly Point Park, shop the Saturday farmers market in Shattuck Park by the river, and visit the glass paperweights at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum.
