About Kaukauna
Kaukauna grew up beside the rapids of the Fox River, a gathering place for the Menominee whose name is said to mean 'the gathering place of the pickerel.' In 1793 the trader Dominique Ducharme got the first recorded land deed in Wisconsin here, and in 1837 Charles A. Grignon built the 'Mansion in the Woods' that still stands by the river. Canals and locks around the falls opened in 1856, paper and flour mills followed, and in 1885 the north side and the south-side village of Ledyard joined as one city. City-owned hydroelectric plants earned it the name 'The Electric City.' Today families come downtown for Wednesday concerts in Hydro Park and the Saturday farmers market, and walk the boardwalk at the 1000 Islands Environmental Center.
