About Red Wing
Red Wing sits on the Mississippi River below a tall limestone bluff, and it is named for a Dakota leader, Chief Red Wing. Settlers came on steamboats in the early 1850s, and the city dates from 1857. In 1873 its warehouses made it the country's top wheat market, and clay from nearby pits started a famous pottery and stoneware trade in the 1860s and 1870s. Skiers here formed one of North America's first ski clubs in 1887. People now come for hiking Barn Bluff, the old downtown with its 1875 hotel and 1904 theatre, and River City Days each summer.
