About Cleveland
Cleveland grew from three small settlements near the Lake Michigan shore: Centerville, named for sitting halfway between Manitowoc and Sheboygan, which was renamed Hika in 1856, and St. Wendel, two miles to the west. In 1880 the land between them took the name Cleveland, after President Grover Cleveland, and in 1958 all three joined as one village. Hika Park, at the end of Lincoln Avenue where Centerville Creek meets the lake, is still called the historic heart of town and is a stop on the Lake Michigan Water Trail. Families come out for the yearly Dairyland Festival at Dairyland Park, ball games at Veteran's Park, and sledding there in winter, and Lakeshore College has its main campus in the village.
