About Kohler

Kohler began in 1900 as a planned company town, when the Kohler Company moved its plant four miles west of Sheboygan to a spot on the Sheboygan River then called Riverside. Walter J. Kohler wanted a place where workers could own their homes in pleasant surroundings, and he brought in the Olmsted Brothers landscape firm to help plan the streets starting in 1917. The village was incorporated in 1912, and most of its original homes went up between 1917 and 1931. Today families tour the Waelderhaus, an Austrian-style house in the woods above the river, and every winter they come to see its gingerbread festival.
