About Manitowoc

Manitowoc sits where the Manitowoc River meets Lake Michigan, and its name comes from Native words often said to mean 'place of the spirits.' Land here was first sold in 1835, and Benjamin Jones is counted as the founder; it became a village in 1851 and a city in 1870. Shipbuilding made the Clipper City: schooners first, then 28 submarines for World War II. Today families tour the World War II submarine USS Cobia at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, walk out to the lighthouse on the north pier, and watch the SS Badger car ferry sail for Michigan.
