About Clintonville
Clintonville began in March 1855, when Norman Clinton and his family settled on the bank of the Pigeon River and lived at first in a shelter of poles and hemlock boughs. The Menominee name for the place means 'where pigeons are hunted.' In 1908 two local machinists, Otto Zachow and William Besserdich, built a working four-wheel-drive car they called the Battleship, and the next year they started the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company here, which built thousands of trucks for the Army in World War I and later fire engines. Today families stroll the downtown by the 1935 post office and bring their kids to storytime, Lego Club and game nights at the public library.
