About Shawano
Shawano grew up where the Wolf River leaves Shawano Lake, a gathering place of a Menominee band led by Chief Sawanoh, whom many people say the town is named for. In 1843 Samuel Farnsworth paddled up the Wolf River by canoe looking for pine, and Charles Wescott built a sawmill on a beaver dam at a spot now called Monkey Island. The settlement became a village in 1871 and a city in 1874, and its Main Street of old shops, none taller than two stories, is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Today families swim, fish and boat on Shawano Lake, tour the old log cabin and one-room school at Heritage Park, and walk downtown for the Holiday Stroll and tree lighting.
