About New London
New London grew up where the Embarrass River meets the Wolf River, on land the Menominee gave up in the 1836 Treaty of the Cedars. Reeder Smith, one of its founders, named it after New London, Connecticut, where his father came from, and the town became a lumber center and the last stop for steamboats coming up the Wolf from Oshkosh. Its brick downtown still holds the 1896 old city hall and the Grand, an 1894 opera house that showed its first movie in 1907 and is a cinema today. Each March the town calls itself New Dublin for a week of Irish fun and a St. Patrick's Day parade, and in spring people line the Wolf River to watch the sturgeon spawn.
