About Waupaca

Waupaca takes its name from a Menominee word, Wāpahkoh, and the Menominee lived around these lakes and the falls of the Waupaca River for thousands of years before giving up the land in an 1848 treaty. In 1849 five men from Vermont came looking for the falls to power mills, and the town that grew up there became a city in 1875. Danish immigrants built Danes Hall, a three-story brick meeting hall with a corner turret, on Main Street in 1894, and the stone railroad depot of 1907 helped make Waupaca a center of the potato trade. Today families come for Strawberry Fest in June, Friday night band concerts at the bandstand on the city square, the Fourth of July parade and fireworks, and the Yuletide parade and tree lighting in December.
