About Como

Como, sometimes called Southeast Como so it isn't mixed up with St. Paul's Como Park, sits just north of the University of Minnesota in southeast Minneapolis. Its main street, Como Avenue, began in 1851 as a territorial road toward Willow River, today's Hudson, Wisconsin, and later took the name of St. Paul's Lake Como, where the road led. James Elwell platted the first blocks in 1882 and paid for the Como Congregational Church, opened in 1887 as both a church and a meeting place for neighbors; teacher and reformer Maria Sanford worshiped there and lived next door. Today Como is a mix of bungalows, Victorian houses and student apartments, with Van Cleve Park, small shops and cafes along Como Avenue, and an old grain elevator tower as its best-known landmark.
