About Northeast

Northeast grew as a working-class home for Polish, Slovak, Ukrainian, Lebanese, German and other immigrants who came for jobs in the river's sawmills and grain mills and later the rail yards and factories; by 1930 nearly 60 percent of its people were immigrants. Its old-country roots still show in its many ethnic churches, delis and markets, and neighbors still call it Nordeast. Starting in the 1990s, artists moved into empty industrial buildings such as the Northrup-King seed plant and the old Grain Belt brewery, and in 2002 the city named the area between Broadway, Central Avenue, 26th Avenue and the river the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. Today the district counts 17 art buildings and more than 1,200 artists, and each May thousands of visitors walk its studios during Art-A-Whirl.
