About Columbia Heights
Columbia Heights is the first suburb north of Minneapolis, built on hilly ground with five small lakes. It became a village in 1898 after splitting from Fridley Township, and a city with its own charter in 1921. Many early families were Polish, and a Polish flag and white eagle still mark the Minneapolis border on Central Avenue. Downtown centers on Central Avenue and 40th Avenue, where the 1926 Heights Theater, the library and shops sit close together.
