About Crandon
Crandon is the county seat of Forest County, on the north shore of Metonga Lake in Wisconsin's Northwoods. It is named for Frank Crandon, a railroad tax official who helped create the county in 1887, and it grew quickly once a large hardwood sawmill opened in the early 1900s and brought in loggers from Kentucky. The city was incorporated in 1909, the same year its brick courthouse with a large cupola went up. Today people come for the lakes, the snowmobile and ATV trails and the off-road races at Crandon International Raceway, and each July Kentuck Day celebrates the town's Kentucky roots.
