About Eagle River
Eagle River takes its name from the eagles nesting along the river, named by two men who camped here in 1853, and long before that it was home to the first lasting Native American settlement in the Northwoods. Lumberjacks built the early town, and after cars arrived in the 1920s it grew into a resort town, set on a chain of lakes that boats can cross between using a hoist at Burnt Rollways Dam. It is the county seat of Vilas County and calls itself the Snowmobile Capital of the World, with the World Championship Snowmobile Derby held here since 1964, and its wooden 1930s hockey arena, called the Dome, holds the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame. Each winter volunteer firefighters stack thousands of blocks of lake ice into a castle downtown, and each fall the town throws a Cranberry Fest to celebrate the harvest from nearby marshes.
