About Merrill

Merrill began as a logging town called Jenny Bull Falls, where the Prairie River meets the Wisconsin River; a trading post stood there by 1843 and a dam and sawmills soon followed. In 1881 it took the name Merrill, after Sherburn S. Merrill of the Milwaukee Road railroad, and in 1883 the first city council met with lumberman T. B. Scott as mayor. As the timber ran out, Merrill turned to making things like shoes, windows and doors. Today families cross the three-arch stone First Street Bridge, borrow books at the 1911 T.B. Scott Free Library, visit Council Grounds State Park just west of town, and line up for the Very Merrill Christmas Parade each December.
