About Antigo
Francis A. Deleglise founded Antigo in 1876, and his log cabin, the town's first house, still stands by the county history museum. The name comes from an Ojibwe phrase about balsam firs by the river, and the city got its charter in 1883. Antigo grew on sawmills and the rich, level farmland of the 'Antigo Flats,' whose Antigo silt loam is now Wisconsin's state soil, and it has a long history of horse racing at the Langlade County Fairgrounds. Today families walk or ski the nearly 5-mile Springbrook Trail along Antigo Lake and Spring Brook, cool off at the city park splash pad, and visit the museum in the old Carnegie library.
