About Rhinelander

Rhinelander began in the logging boom where the Pelican River meets the Wisconsin River, at rapids the first settlers called Pelican Rapids. The Brown family, who wanted a sawmill town, named it after railroad president F. W. Rhinelander, and the rail line arrived in 1882. In 1896 timber cruiser Gene Shepard showed off a photo of the Hodag, a horned, tusked forest monster he later admitted he made from wood and ox hide, and the Hodag became the town's beloved mascot. Today Rhinelander is the shopping and gathering hub of the Northwoods, with more than 200 lakes close by, a copper-domed courthouse, and Pioneer Park's old logging camp buildings and depot to explore.
