About Crivitz
Crivitz was surveyed and platted in the summer of 1883 by Frederick John Bartels, a German immigrant who named it after his home town of Crivitz, Germany, and the railroad depot built that year still serves trains today. After the sawmills went quiet in the 1890s, mill operator Hieronymus Zech brought in Polish families, many from Milwaukee and Chicago, and built stores, homes, schools and roads, so much of the town is Polish-American still. Shops grew up along Main Avenue, and Crivitz became a village in 1913 and again in 1974. Today it is a gateway to the lakes and flowages of Marinette County, where people come to fish, go whitewater rafting and tubing, ride snowmobile trails and watch the Ski Cats water-ski on summer evenings.
