About Oconto Falls
Oconto Falls is named for the falls on the Oconto River, where John and Almira Volk settled in 1846 and sawed their first log at a water-powered sawmill the next year. Lumber kept the town busy for decades, the falls were later dammed for power, and in 1908 a new pulp mill here made the first kraft (brown) paper produced for sale in the United States. The river still splits the city into an east side and a west side, with beaches, boat launches and park pavilions along its banks. Today families come to the library's storytimes and playgroups, cheer on the Panthers, catch a show at the Falls Area Performing Arts Center, and bring lawn chairs to free summer concerts at Eastside Beach.
