About Marinette
Marinette sits where the Menominee River meets Green Bay, across the river from Menominee, Michigan. It is named for Marie Antoinette Chevalier, a Métis woman called Queen Marinette who ran a trading post near the river mouth; she and her husband John Jacobs settled here in 1823. Logs floated down the river made it a busy lumber town, and by 1900 it was the tenth-largest city in Wisconsin. Today families picnic and hear summer concerts on Stephenson Island, visit the logging museum there, and cheer at the football rivalry with Menominee that goes back to 1894.
