About Peshtigo
People began settling along the Peshtigo River around 1838, and the river carried tall white pines to sawmills that built a busy lumber town. On October 8, 1871, the same day as the Chicago Fire, a firestorm destroyed Peshtigo, and residents rebuilt their homes, mills and churches. The town became a village in 1887 and a city in 1903, and the first church raised after the fire now holds the Peshtigo Fire Museum. Today families fish above and below the dam, swim at the small beach by Badger Park, camp along its nature trails, and fill downtown each September for Peshtigo Historical Day.
