About Crystal
Crystal began as Crystal Lake Township in 1860, after settlers arrived in the early 1850s to farm the prairie and cut wood near the lakes. Mills on Shingle Creek and brickyards along the Mississippi gave early residents work. The village was incorporated in 1887, and it became a home-rule charter city in 1960. Today it is a close-in suburb west of Minneapolis with 26 parks, the Crystal Community Center and a yearly Frolics weekend each July.
