About Janesville
Janesville grew up on the Rock River on land where a Ho-Chunk village once stood, and it takes its name from Henry Janes, who arrived in 1835 after the post office turned down his first choice, Blackhawk. Farm families from New England and New York followed, mills rose along the river, and in 1859 Abraham Lincoln spent two nights in the Tallman family's new brick house on the bluff. Later the town was known for the Parker Pen Company and a big General Motors plant, and a city planner hired in 1919 helped make it the City of Parks. Today families picnic along the river, watch the Rock Aqua Jays build tall water-ski pyramids on the river in summer, and walk the light show at Rotary Botanical Gardens in winter.
