About Beloit
Beloit began in 1836, when settlers from New Hampshire chose this spot on the Rock River for its level fields and the water power of Turtle Creek. It was first called New Albany and took the name Beloit in 1838, laid out with wide New England-style streets. Beloit College came in 1846, and its first building, Middle College, still stands; the campus also keeps old Native American effigy mounds, one shaped like a turtle. Today people shop the small stores of downtown Beloit, a Wisconsin Main Street town on the Illinois line, fill State Street and Grand Avenue for the Saturday farmers market, and walk between screens at the Beloit International Film Festival.
