About Crookston
Crookston was settled around 1872 on the Red Lake River, in the flat, rich farmland of the Red River Valley. It took its name from Col. William Crooks, chief engineer of the Great Northern Railway, and the story says a coin toss settled the choice. At one point eight railroad lines reached town, and settlers from Scandinavia, French Canada and Germany came to work and farm. Today the town is home to a University of Minnesota campus and to the Grand Theater, a downtown movie house that opened in 1910.
