About Hill Farms
University Hill Farms, or simply Hill Farms, is a west side neighborhood built on land that was once a University of Wisconsin experimental farm. The name goes back to Harmon and Clarissa Hill, who farmed here from the 1840s; the university bought their farm in 1897 and grew it to 613 acres. In the 1950s the university and the city turned the farm into a planned community with curving streets, parks, a school, churches and shops, and the first lots went on sale in 1955. Most homes are 1950s ranch houses, with split-levels, contemporary designs and one prefab house by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the area joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. Neighbors gather at Rennebohm Park for the July 4th kids' bike parade and picnic and for summer band concerts, and at hilltop Garner Park, home of Madison's first pickleball courts.
