About Phillips
Phillips was laid out in 1876 beside Elk Lake and the Elk River as a railroad and logging town, and it was named for Elijah B. Phillips of the Wisconsin Central Railway. After a fire in 1894, people rebuilt the main street in red brick, some with sandstone trim, and many of those buildings still stand. Farm families from Eastern Europe, many of them Czech, settled the cut-over land, and the Lidice Memorial in Sokol Park still honors that heritage. Today families fish the Phillips Chain of Lakes, camp on the beach at Elk Lake, wander among more than 200 folk art figures at Fred Smith's Wisconsin Concrete Park, and come to town for WinterFest, the Fourth of July and the Fall Harvest Festival.
