About Elgin
Elgin was laid out in 1878, when the railroad was built out to this spot in the farm country of Wabasha County, and it took its name from Elgin in Scotland. The old rail line is now the Great River Ridge State Trail, a paved path that runs through town on its way between Plainview and Eyota. Elgin is a town of about 1,100 people on Highway 42, about 20 minutes from Rochester, with five city parks, including 14-acre Hoenk Park with ball fields, a pond and a path to the trail. Its middle school and 4-5 building are part of the Plainview-Elgin-Millville schools, the Bulldogs, and every year the town holds its own festival, Elgin Cheese Days.
