About Oronoco
Oronoco began as a village in 1854 on the Middle Fork of the Zumbro River, and an early settler, Dr. Hector Galloway, named it after the Orinoco, a big river in South America. In 1857 gold was found along the Zumbro's banks, but two floods in 1859 washed away the miners' gear and the rush was over. More than a hundred years later, in 1972, Earl Berg started a new kind of gold rush: an antique show with 38 sellers. Today Downtown Oronoco Gold Rush Days fills about 30 acres every August with antique booths, music, a car show, a parade and a duck race on the river, and its proceeds go back to the town. Oronoco became a city in 1968 and is now a growing home town of about 1,800 people just north of Rochester.
