About Eyota

Settlers began staking claims around Eyota in 1854, and one of the first, Benjamin Bear, picked a spot by a spring that still feeds Bear Creek. The town was platted in 1864, and its name comes from a Dakota word meaning greatest or most. Eyota grew as a railroad town: a row of stores, a hotel and a depot faced the busy rail yard on South Front Street, and nearby rail lines ran on to Plainview and Chatfield. Farmers built a cooperative creamery here in 1924, and the building still stands as a reminder of the area's dairy farms. Today Eyota is a town of about 2,000 people east of Rochester, home of the Dover-Eyota schools.
