About Elk River

Elk River grew where the Elk and Mississippi rivers meet. Zebulon Pike named the Elk River in 1805 after the herds of elk he saw, and a fur trading post stood here by 1846. Settlers from Maine built a dam and sawmill in 1851, and lumber, then farming, powered the town. It became the Sherburne County seat in 1872. Today people come for the river, a historic downtown with murals, 41 parks, and a lively arts scene.
