About Elkhart Lake
The Potawatomi named this spring-fed lake for its shape, which looks like the heart of an elk. Visitors came by stagecoach from Glenbeulah in the 1860s, and after the Milwaukee and Northern Railroad reached town in 1872 Elkhart Lake grew into a lakeside resort, becoming a village in 1894. In the early 1950s sports cars raced on the public roads around the lake, and the races later moved to Road America, a track a few miles south. Today families swim at the beach in Fireman's Park, browse the Saturday farmers market on the Village Square, and line Lake Street each summer to see race cars parked downtown.
