About Loring Park
Loring Park began in 1883, when the city's new park board bought about 30 acres of land with a boggy lake on the southwest edge of downtown; in 1890 it was named for Charles Loring, the board's first president. It was the first park in Minnesota with electric lights, put up in 1884 for winter skating on the pond, and in 1906 it got the first permanent building in any Minneapolis park. Apartment buildings, many from the early 1900s, grew up around the park, along with St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral and the Basilica of Saint Mary, the first basilica in the United States. Today the Loring Greenway links the park to Nicollet Mall, and the park fills each June for the Twin Cities Pride Festival.
