About Elroy
Elroy got its name in 1858; one story says settlers wanted LeRoy, found it was taken, and swapped the first two letters. The Baraboo Air Line Railroad reached town in the 1870s, and for years Elroy was a busy rail hub where two railroads kept roundhouses. When the trains left, the old line west to Sparta became the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, and later the 400 and Omaha trails joined it here, so Elroy now sits where three bike trails meet. Downtown still has its 1860 opera house, a 1937 theater and a 1908 Carnegie library with a soldier statue out front.
