About Hillsboro
Hillsboro is named for Valentia Hill and his brothers, who began arriving along the West Branch of the Baraboo River in 1850. A sawmill and a grist mill came first, then dairying took hold in the 1880s, and the town was soon shipping butter as far as Chicago. Czech families from Bohemia settled here in the 1800s, and each summer the city celebrates being the Czech capital of Wisconsin at its Cesky Den festival. Nearby Cheyenne Valley became a home for African American settlers after the Civil War, and the round barns built by Alga Shivers still stand in the countryside. Today families fish from the pier at Field Veterans Memorial Park, camp and play disc golf at Albert Field Memorial Park, and line the streets for the Firemen's Labor Day parade.
