About New Lisbon
Long before the town, the Ho-Chunk camped here in winter and called the spot 'where canoes are placed.' Lumbermen came in 1838 and built a sawmill on the Lemonweir River, and in 1855 the village was laid out as Mill Haven before it took the name New Lisbon. The railroad arrived in 1857, and the town grew into a busy rail stop; after a fire in 1903 it rebuilt its main blocks in brick, like the Barnes Block opera house. Today 'the Friendly City' sits just off Interstate 90/94, with a riverside campground, a city pool, and fishing and boating on the Lemonweir and nearby Castle Rock Lake. Bikers ride the Elroy-Sparta and Omaha trails close by, and in winter people come for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
