About Emerson East

Emerson East is a small east side neighborhood north of the Yahara River, along East Johnson Street and East Washington Avenue. Its big landmark is Madison East High School, a Collegiate Gothic building from 1922 that is the oldest public high school still running in Madison. Nearby, the 49-acre Demetral Park has softball and kickball fields, a playground and a fenced dog park, and is named for Jimmy Demetral, a Greek-born wrestling champion who held a benefit for children in Madison for 45 years. At the corner of East Johnson and First streets, three steel and wood sculptures spelling WE, US and OUR welcome people into the neighborhood at Emerson East Park, and Burr Jones Park offers fishing on the Yahara River and a bike path.
