About Marquette

Marquette is the near-east-side neighborhood on the Madison isthmus between the Capitol and the Yahara River, with Williamson Street, or Willy Street, as its main street. Its oldest part, the Third Lake Ridge along Lake Monona, mixed homes with shops and factories; the brick Machinery Row block went up in 1898, and the Madison Candy Company made chocolates on Williamson Street from 1903. Orton Park, a village cemetery in 1846, opened in 1887 as Madison's first public park, and in the 1920s the marshy blocks near the river filled with the city's largest group of Craftsman bungalows. Today Willy Street is known for its locally owned shops, the Willy Street Co-op, colorful painted houses and murals, and summer festivals like the Waterfront Festival, La Fete de Marquette and the Orton Park Festival.
