About Schenk-Atwood
Schenk-Atwood, often called SASY for Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara, is the east side neighborhood between the Yahara River and Starkweather Creek, reaching south to Lake Monona. At its heart is Schenk's Corners, the first shopping center to grow up along Madison's streetcar line outside downtown, in the 1920s, and Atwood Avenue is its main street. The domed Eastwood Theater opened there in 1929 and lives on as the Barrymore Theatre, while the 1905 sugar beet factory that became the Garver Feed Mill stands beside Olbrich Botanical Gardens and its glass pyramid conservatory. Families picnic and swim at Olbrich Park on the lake, spot Sid Boyum's playful sculptures around the neighborhood, and fill Atwood Avenue each summer for AtwoodFest.
