About Evansville
New England settlers came to the wooded land along Allen Creek in the 1830s, and the town was first platted in 1855 and named for Dr. John M. Evans, an early doctor and postmaster. A dam on the creek in 1847 made Lake Leota to run the mills, and after the railroad arrived in 1863, shops here built carriages, wagons, pumps and windmills while farms around grew wheat, tobacco and dairy. More than 300 of its buildings are listed as historic, and families walk a Main Street paved with old brick, past carved shopfronts and murals about the town's past. Leonard-Leota Park, the town's first park, still draws people to fish, paddle, play disc golf and cross its covered bridge.
