About Brodhead
Brodhead began in 1856, when the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad laid out a new town on its line and named it for its chief engineer, Edward H. Brodhead. Its brick downtown around Exchange Square is on the National Register, and the old Milwaukee Road depot is now a museum with a locomotive and caboose out back. The town is known for the grass runways of Brodhead Airport, where old-time planes gather each July for the Pietenpol and Hatz fly-in, and for the Half-Way Tree, a bur oak said to mark the middle of the trail between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi. Families ride the Sugar River State Trail to the covered bridge, paddle the old Mill Race by Pearl Island, and come downtown for summer concerts and Covered Bridge Days in August.
