About Fox Lake
Fox Lake began in 1838 as the first settlement in Dodge County, on land the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) people called a name meaning good land. When the Milwaukee Road built its depot here in 1884, the trains carried the town's livestock, grain and canned goods to faraway markets and brought summer visitors to the cottages on the big lake just north of town. Jazz trumpeter Bunny Berigan grew up in Fox Lake, and for more than forty years the town held a jazz festival in his name. Today the old wooden depot is the Fox Lake Historical Museum, open on summer Sundays, and the public library on State Street keeps a history room full of the town's old papers.
