About Granite Falls
Granite Falls grew up on the Minnesota River, where a post office opened in 1870 and the town was laid out in 1872, named for the granite rock found there. It became the seat of Yellow Medicine County in 1874, and its courthouse has stood since 1880. A railroad depot built in 1888 still stands, and a 280-foot walking bridge from 1935, built under license from the company behind the Brooklyn Bridge, still crosses the river. Today people visit the Andrew Volstead House museum, walk the lit footbridge, and pack the stands each June for the Western Fest rodeo.
