About Hartland

Hartland started in the Bark River valley in the late 1830s, when Stephen Warren walked from Milwaukee and bought land there in 1839, and for a while the settlement was called Warren and then Hersheyville, after a grist mill built in 1842. Inns sprang up along the Watertown Plank Road in 1846, and when the railroad arrived in 1854 the village took the name Hartland; it became an incorporated village in 1892. Its 1879 brick depot still stands, along with old Gothic Revival churches and the 1894 Bank of Hartland on Capitol Drive. Today families come downtown for the chamber's Summer Market Series in Nixon Park, the August street dance, and a Halloween trick-or-treat walk past local shops, with twelve lakes within five miles of town.
