About Sussex

Sussex was founded in 1843 by George Elliott, a bricklayer from Sussex in England, and Richard Cooling, a blacksmith from Dorset, and it grew up along Main Street. Together with Templeton, the hamlet on its east side, it became a village in 1924, when only 387 people lived here. Trains on the line now called the Bugline once hauled stone from the nearby limestone quarries, and today that rail bed is a paved trail through the village. Families now come to the Pauline Haass Public Library and the Sussex-Lisbon Area Museum in the Civic Center, and each fall to the chili cook-off near Halloween that raises money for the Sussex food pantry.
